The Sermon on the Mount: A Portrait, Not a Prescription

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

When Jesus sat down on that hillside and began to speak, his audience expected the usual calculus of blessing.
The shock of the Beatitudes
Then Jesus opens his mouth and says: blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. Blessed are the meek. To his listeners, this was not inspiring — it was scandalous.
Description, not prescription
The Beatitudes are not a to-do list. Jesus is describing the people who already belong to the Kingdom — people who know their own need, who grieve what is broken, who do not grasp for power.
What this means for us
If the Beatitudes are descriptive, then the question they ask of us is not 'am I doing enough?' but 'do I recognise myself here?'
